The University of St. Paul is an English-French bilingual Catholic Bishop’s University located on Main Street in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The university offers instruction in the country’s two official languages: French and English.
The history of the university can be traced back to Bytown College, founded in 1848 by Joseph Bruno Giggs, the first Bishop of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ottawa. In 1856, the college was formally entrusted to the Missionaries of the Sacrament of Mary, a commission that has been in place for more than a century and a half. In 1866, the college was renamed Ottawa College. Its rewritten civil charter was ratified by the Ontario Government in 1933, when it was officially renamed the University of Ottawa, and its revised papal statutes were ratified by the Holy See. On July 1, 1965, by an act of the Ontario Legislature, the institution previously known as the University of Ottawa changed its name to the University of St. Paul, retaining its civil and papal statutes.
