The State University of New York Plattsburgh College, also known as SUNY Plattsburgh or Plattsburgh City University, is a four-year public liberal arts college located in the city of Plattsburgh, New York, United States. The university was founded in 1889 and opened in 1890. Former New York State politician and influential Plattsburgh businessman Smith M. Weed worked to advocate for the establishment of a state normal school in the city of Plattsburgh. Multiple proposals to the New York State Senate date back to 1869, with the last bill formally introduced on January 12, 1859, by George S. Weed, son of Smith M. Weed, and then by a member of Congress. With the strong support of General Assembly Director Stephen Moffitt, the Plattsburgh Normal and Training School Act was passed by both houses of the New York State Legislature and signed into law by then-Governor David B. Hill in June 1889. On September 2, 1889, the Board of Trustees approved the official bylaws to establish the Plattsburgh Municipal Normal and Training School. The Plattsburgh Municipal Normal and Training School officially held its first day of classes on the morning of September 3, 1890. The first president of the school was Dr. Fox Holden.

Plattsburgh City Teachers and Training School joined the State University of New York system in 1948 and was renamed the State University of New York Plattsburgh College. When the school became part of the State University of New York system, it transitioned from a two-year faculty institution to a four-year public liberal arts college. In the 1960s and 1970s, the State University of New York Plattsburgh College, as well as the State University of New York system as a whole, grew rapidly. During this time, more modern buildings were added to the campus, including the Angle College Center, the Feinberg Library, and several high-rise dormitories. Since 1978, the student population has been relatively small, with an enrollment of 5,900 to 6,600 students. The lowest number of students enrolled was 5,909 in the fall semester of 2004, and the highest number was 6,594 in the fall of 1988.
