The University of South Wales was formed in 2013 by the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport (also known as the University of Newport). The history of the university can be traced back to the establishment of Newport Mechanical College in 1841.
The University has five main campuses:
Caerleon – Located in the northern suburb of Newport, is the university’s second largest campus and offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, including education, sports and photography.
Edwardian – offers a wide range of sports facilities, libraries and student unions. It was once the main campus of the University of Newport in Wales.
Cardiff – Home to the College of Creative Industries. It used to be part of the University of Glamorgan.
Glyntaff – Nursing, science and physical education programs are all set in the campus.
Newport – The university’s newest campus. Opened in 2011, it was originally part of the University of Newport, which offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including business and the world-renowned film School.
Treforest – This was once the main campus of the University of Glamorgan. Currently the university’s largest campus, it has a range of facilities, including an indoor sports centre and a student union. It is just 12 miles from Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The university’s beautiful surroundings, proximity to the bustling market area and some of the UK’s most stunning countryside make it an ideal place to live and study.
The University of South Wales has a total of five modern campuses, three of which belonged to the pre-merger University of Glamorgan, including Cardiff, Glyntaff and Treforest. The other two campuses, Caerleon and Edwardian, are part of the former University of Newport.
The Glyntaff and Treforest campuses are close to the busy market town of Pontypridd. It is easy to get to Cardiff by train or car and only takes 20 minutes. In 2007, a new campus was invested in Cardiff, Wales – the Creative and Cultural Industries Institute, located in Cardiff city centre.
The university’s main campus is located in Treforest, a town between Cardiff and the Brecon Beacons National Park, a small mining village that contributed to the industrial economic boom of South Wales in the 19th century. Today, the University of Glamorgan uses its academic strength to continue to contribute to the economic development of the region. Surrounded by rolling mountains, you will get a traditional Welsh impression – quiet and beautiful. Close to the Brecon Beacons Mountains, it is easy to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as equestrian, rock climbing, canoeing, paddling and more. There are also amazing beaches nearby.
